LAIKA Films Ranked
It may not get talked about as much as other animation studios out there, and it may only have five films to its name as of right now, but I think LAIKA is up there with the best of them. Their films utilize an utterly breathtaking stop-motion animation style mixed with lovable characters and imaginative stories. They've already shown quite a lot of variety in their short library of films, and they are filled with elements that can appeal to people of all ages. The studio had some box office bombs with its last two entries, "Kubo And The Two Strings" and "The Missing Link". The latter actually ended up making them lose over 70 million dollars! That is simply unacceptable. More people should be seeing their movies! The people who work at LAIKA are extremely talented and clearly put a lot of thought and care into their films. The company deserves to make more revenue. I hope that their upcoming film planned for release next year, "Wildwood", can get them back on track financially.I'll definitely be seeing "Wildwood" when it comes out. As for right now, I thought it would be fun to rank all of LAIKA's films from worst to best. Please know that I enjoyed all of them. It's just that I found some better than others.5. THE BOXTROLLSI found it the least interesting of LAIKA's films, and I thought the climax was a tad dragged-out. That being said, it still offers plenty of heart and adventure, not to mention a good dose of British humor. The weakest LAIKA film is still a solid animated movie in its own right.4. PARANORMANThis was a fun spooky adventure with a great atmosphere to it. I found the mystery on how to stop the curse to be interesting, and the film got really exciting once the zombies started showing up. The resolution was surprisingly sweet and touching.3. THE MISSING LINKThis is LAIKA's most expensive film to date, and it really shows on the screen. The locations are gorgeous and vast in scope, giving the adventure an epic feel to it. Tying the whole thing together are the trio of main characters, who have great chemistry. Link, especially, was an absolute treasure.2. CORALINEA classic and for good reason. This film blends a fairy tail-esque story with many disturbing horror movie tropes virtually seamlessly. Even during the whimsical, carefree scenes where Coraline is enjoying time with her "other" family, you still feel something sinister lurking beneath. Coraline is a wonderful main character, the film is really funny, and the atmosphere is spot-on. It even got really heartwarming near the end. It all adds up to a stunning debut for LAIKA.1. KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGSThis is an animated classic that has a little something for everyone. The story is deep, mature, and thought-provoking; the action sequences are thrilling; the characters are lovable and complex; there's just the right amount of humor; the oriental culture being depicted is intriguing; and the emotional moments ring true. For right now, this is the LAIKA film to beat, and it really showed the studio reaching their full potential as artists.
